The Case for the Temple
No Temple has stood in Jerusalem for almost 2,000 years. Since 1967 the plans, vessels, priests and prayers for a Third Temple have moved from the fringe into government.
Overview
The Second Temple was destroyed by Roman legions under Titus in AD 70, and for most of the time since, Jews have mourned it each year on Tisha B'Av. The platform where it stood, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Al-Aqsa compound or Haram al-Sharif, now holds the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is the holiest site in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam, and its future is one of the issues any final Israeli-Palestinian peace deal has to settle.
When Israel captured the Old City in June 1967, defence minister Moshe Dayan left day-to-day control of the site with the Jordanian-run Islamic Waqf. Jews could visit but not pray. That arrangement, known as the status quo, is the line every event in this Signpost presses against. In 1987 the Temple Institute was founded in the Jewish Quarter to prepare sacred vessels and priestly garments for a rebuilt Temple, and in 2022 red heifers for the purification ritual were brought from Texas.
Since then the preparation has moved from study to logistics. The Temple Institute has made more than 60 vessels, including a gold-covered menorah that stands facing the Mount, the showbread table, an incense altar, a laver, silver trumpets, a High Priest's headplate and breastplate, and a replica Ark of the Covenant. It has begun a stone altar, commissioned architectural plans, bred and imported red heifers, rehearsed the red heifer burning in 2025, and trains priests and Levites. Passover sacrifices are rehearsed beside the Mount, and each year activists try to bring one onto it.
The politics has moved with it. Jewish prayer on the Mount has gone from forbidden to tolerated, and Itamar Ben-Gvir, the minister in charge of the police, has said he would build a synagogue there if he could. In 2017 Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and an Israeli group marked it with a coin pairing him with King Cyrus, the Persian king who let the Jews return to rebuild the Temple. The same site became the rallying cry of Hamas's 7 October attack, whose spokesman later listed the red heifers among its motives. Officially, Israeli governments still say the status quo has not changed. In practice, Ben-Gvir has announced from the Mount that Jews may pray and bow there, Jewish men now pray there with prayer books, and in 2026 Netanyahu himself spoke of having prevented the destruction of the "Third Temple". The official line holds while the facts on the Mount move. Many Orthodox rabbis still oppose Jews ascending it at all.
Scripture describes where this leads. Daniel foretold a ruler who would "confirm the covenant with many for one week" and, in the midst of it, "cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease" (Daniel 9:27). Jesus pointed to the same moment, "the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet," standing "in the holy place" (Matthew 24:15), and Paul described the ruler himself, who "as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God" (2 Thessalonians 2:4). In Revelation, John is told to "measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein," but to leave out the outer court, "for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months" (Revelation 11:1-2). Each passage assumes a Temple standing in Jerusalem, with worship and sacrifice under way. As END X explains, that covenant is likely to be an internationally sponsored peace deal confirming Israel's right to the land, with the abomination set up three and a half years later by a ruler in alignment with man-made religion but set against God. That is why this Signpost runs alongside Peace and Safety, which follows the deals; Trump vs the New World Order, which has put America at the centre of them; and WW3, because the Mount has already been a rallying cry for war. This Signpost does not set a date or claim any event below fulfils prophecy. It tracks whether the conditions Scripture describes are being put in place.
Key verseWhen ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Matthew 24:15 (KJV)

Jordan Annexes the West Bank After the 1948 War
Before Israel took the Old City in 1967, Jordan controlled the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Its 1950 annexation followed the 1948 war; Britain recognised the union but not Jordanian sovereignty over Jerusalem. This is the territorial background to the Temple Mount's later change of control, not evidence that a new Temple was being built.

Israel Captures Jerusalem's Old City and Temple Mount in Six-Day War
Israeli paratroopers reached the Western Wall and the Temple Mount came under Jewish control for the first time since AD 70. In the weeks after, Moshe Dayan left administration with the Islamic Waqf: Jews could visit but not pray. That status quo is the line every later step presses against.
