WW3: Abrahamic Extremism and the 'Peace from Above'
The Middle East war is increasingly framed as religious, and the answer taking shape is peace from above: peace boards, interfaith appeals and limits on belief.
Overview
At the centre of this Signpost is the believer. Across the Middle East the war is increasingly described in religious terms: red heifers and Third Temple language in Israel, jihad and organised "self-sacrifice" in Iran, and repeated flashpoints at the Temple Mount. These are reported events; the claim that they are steps toward a single outcome is interpretation.
The Concepts working idea is that world wars create the justification for new global structures, and that a war interpreted as religious could make the world accept what it previously refused. The response visible in this archive fits that shape. A Board of Peace now negotiates disarmament, and the Pope was invited to join it. The line that the enemy is not a religion but its radicals goes back at least to President Bush, who told Al Arabiya in 2007 the fight was "peaceful people versus radical people". Vatican documents now call fundamentalism the problem and dialogue the cure; the Metz Appeal and the Assisi gathering present religions together as a "path" to peace and speak of the "spiritual unification" of the world.
The pressure point for the individual is the boundary drawn around belief. Hate-speech laws, a Vatican envoy's statement that inciting speech forfeits liberty, and a party platform grouping evangelicals with jihadists show how "extremist" can be defined, and prosecutions over silent prayer and biblical views on marriage show it already reaching Christians who hold to Scripture. The same contest runs through culture: Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran's tour over "Free Palestine" remarks his critics called antisemitic, and a boycott then targeted Sheeran's whole tour. Meanwhile antisemitic violence has reached its deadliest level in decades; when a war is framed as religious, blame can fall on Jews everywhere rather than on a government. Scripture describes wars that "must come to pass" and an authority over "all kindreds, and tongues, and nations"; this Signpost watches for movement in that direction. Extremists must conform, a cry that will be deafening after the next global conflict.
Key verseAnd ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Matthew 24:6 (KJV)

World's Parliament of Religions Opens in Chicago
The modern interfaith movement traces its start to Chicago in 1893, when Eastern and Western religious representatives shared one platform. Its organiser spoke of 'a return to the primitive unity of the world'. The Parliament was revived in 1993 and still convenes; later multi-faith peace efforts in this timeline follow the same path.

The Catholic Church formally opened itself to other religions here: Vatican II declared it 'rejects nothing that is true and holy' in them and regards Muslims 'with esteem'. This declaration is the Catholic groundwork for Assisi 1986 and the Vatican's interfaith initiatives that follow in this timeline.

John Paul II Hosts First World Day of Prayer for Peace in Assisi
The first Assisi day set the template for multi-faith peace prayer: a Pope invited Christian and other religious leaders to pray, fast and walk together for peace, each in their own way. John Paul II said the prayers were not merged into a 'common denominator'. Forty years on, the 2026 Assisi gathering later in this timeline carries on the same 'Spirit of Assisi'.

A century after Chicago 1893, the Parliament moved from bringing religions together to agreeing a shared ethic: common principles drawn from religious and humanist traditions alike. This is the Parliament's declaration; the United Religions Initiative adopted its own Charter in 2000.

Timed to the UN Charter's anniversary, URI set out to organise religions worldwide for peace through grassroots 'Cooperation Circles'. Its Charter commits members to end religiously motivated violence; its founder saw religions, together, as 'a force for good in the world'.

Unveiled two days before 9/11 at an Earth Charter celebration, this painted chest was then carried on poles from Vermont towards the UN. Where the Ark of the Covenant held the tablets of the Law, the Ark of Hope holds the Earth Charter, a "Peoples Treaty" whose backers sought "acceptance from all nations", surrounded by symbols of the world's faiths.

Bush Tells Al Arabiya He Is Not an 'Enemy of Islam', Says All Faiths Pray to Same God
Asked in a TV interview whether he was an "enemy of Islam", President George W. Bush said no: the conflict was "peaceful people versus radical people", "Islam is a great religion that preaches peace", and Muslims and Christians pray "to the same God". The enemy is defined not as a religion but as its radicals. The same line is later drawn around "fundamentalism" further down this timeline.

The same month Bush said all faiths pray to the same God, 138 Muslim scholars made a parallel case: that Islam and Christianity share common ground in love of God and neighbour, and that 'the future of the world depends on peace between Muslims and Christians'.

A year after leaving Downing Street, Tony Blair launched a foundation to bring the world's religions together, calling for "peaceful co-existence" and telling his audience "we must be global citizens as well as citizens of our country". Bush's talk of faiths sharing one God now had a former prime minister building an institution around it.

Pope Francis and Grand Imam Sign Document on Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi
The Pope and Al-Azhar's Grand Imam jointly declared that the diversity of religions is 'willed by God'. Vatican News called the Abrahamic Family House, the mosque, church and synagogue complex that follows in this timeline, the first initiative to embody this document.

Abrahamic Family House Unites Mosque, Synagogue and Church in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi set the interfaith project in stone: a mosque, a church and a synagogue side by side on one site, opened in 2023 and inspired by the 2019 Document on Human Fraternity that Pope Francis and Al-Azhar's Grand Imam signed in the city. It is the physical model of the 'fraternity' later offered as the path to peace.

Prisoner payments brought public funding into the conflict. Critics called the sentence-linked scheme 'pay for slay' because it included convicted attackers and, they argued, rewarded terrorism. Abbas announced a switch to needs-based welfare in February 2025. The decree is a reported reform, not proof that the old practices stopped; it shows how violence, money and diplomatic pressure intersect.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam each expect a coming redemptive figure, and the article notes these competing expectations increasingly shape political tension. This is the backdrop: the same land carries three incompatible end-time hopes.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, launched "Within Your Gates: The Forum for the Universal Vocation of Jerusalem" with the University of Notre Dame's centre in the city. Herzog Warns of Global Antisemitism Surge as Hate Crimes Hit Record Levels
Herzog cited a J7 taskforce finding that 2025 was the deadliest year for diaspora Jews since 1994: 20 killed in antisemitic attacks across seven countries and more than 23,000 incidents. When a war is framed as religious, blame can fall on a people instead of a government, and Jews far from Israel are treated as answerable for it. Criticism of Israel's government is not in itself antisemitism; targeting Jews as Jews is.

After Macklemore said "free Palestine" and showed Gaza images at two New Jersey shows, Jewish groups objected and venues pressed the promoter. Stadium owner Robert Kraft told JTA the rapper's material and "a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric" would cross into "hate speech" at his venue. Finneas and the other support acts quit, saying artists "must not be silenced". The same words were advocacy to one side and hate speech to the other, and the line was drawn by whoever controlled the stage.

Even a stated choice to stay neutral was not accepted: public figures are pressed to declare a side.
