Ark of Hope Carries the Earth Charter Down the Hudson Towards the UN

Ark of Hope / Clearwater·6 November 2001

On 6 November 2001, the Hudson River sloop Clearwater reported it was sailing the Ark of Hope down to Manhattan. The painted chest, made by Vermont artist Sally Linder from a single plank of sycamore maple, holds the Earth Charter handwritten on papyrus and handmade 'Temenos Books' of prayers and affirmations for Earth; symbols of faith from religions and indigenous societies surround its 'Spirit' panel. Supporters had walked it from Vermont after the 11 September attacks. Because of heightened security at the United Nations it rested at New York's Interfaith Center, and it was exhibited at the UN in January–February 2002.
