US Ban on a Federal Reserve Digital Currency Becomes Law Without Trump's Signature

The Block·11 July 2026

A provision barring the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency became law on 11 July 2026 inside the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, after President Trump let the bill pass without his signature. Cointelegraph reported that the ban covers a CBDC "or any digital asset that is substantially similar" until 31 December 2030. The bill passed the Senate 85-5 and the House 358-32. The ban is temporary: a future Congress can extend it or let it lapse.
