TSA Begins Full REAL ID Enforcement at US Airport Checkpoints

Transportation Security Administration·11 April 2025

The Transportation Security Administration announced that from 7 May 2025 it would no longer accept state-issued identification that is not REAL ID compliant at security checkpoints. The agency said it was enforcing the 2005 REAL ID Act, which set federal standards for driver's licences and ID cards after the 9/11 Commission's recommendations, and that 81% of travellers already presented acceptable ID. Twenty years after the law was passed, a federally standardised ID became the condition for boarding a domestic flight.
