The REAL ID Act became law on 11 May 2005. It set minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licences and identification cards and restricted federal acceptance of cards that did not meet those standards. The law followed a recommendation of the 9/11 Commission and made state licensing systems part of a common federal identification framework.
