Mastercard Launches Calculator Estimating Carbon Emissions From Spending

Mastercard launched a carbon calculator on 12 April 2021 to estimate the emissions associated with consumers' spending. CNN reported that it used the Doconomy Åland Index and merchant categories to calculate average footprints, without tracking the carbon content of individual purchases. The tool also showed how many trees would absorb an equivalent amount of CO2. It brought estimated carbon accounting into the information attached to card spending.
