Malaysia began enforcing age checks for licensed social media services on 1 June 2026, restricting new accounts to users aged 16 or over. Checks must use government-issued or recognised equivalent records; The Star listed MyKad, passports and MyDigital ID as options. MCMC allowed up to six months to verify existing users, with a month for identified under-16s to retrieve their data before restrictions. The rules made proof of age a condition of holding an account on covered services.
