The ID2020 Alliance announced at its New York summit a digital identity programme with the Government of Bangladesh and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Using existing vaccination and birth registration operations, the programme aims to give newborns a "persistent and portable biometrically-linked digital identity" and to assess infant biometric technologies. Gavi's chief executive said it could be replicated across Gavi-supported countries. Biometric Update later noted the aim was to record and prove vaccination, not to track people.
