The Holy See and China announced on 22 October 2022 that they had renewed their provisional agreement on appointing bishops for another two years. It was the second renewal of the deal first signed in September 2018, and its terms remained confidential. Cardinal Pietro Parolin described the arrangement as still experimental. The extension kept a negotiated appointment channel open between Rome and Beijing while restrictions on religious practice continued.
