China partially blocks WhatsApp as internet censorship tightens

The Guardian·19 July 2017

China partially blocked WhatsApp as officials prepared for a Communist Party leadership reshuffle. The Guardian tested the service in Beijing on 19 July and found photo, video and voice messages blocked while text messages still worked. The report also cited Citizen Lab findings that private WeChat conversations about Liu Xiaobo were being censored. Access to private communication was narrowing alongside controls on public websites.
