UN General Assembly Adopts Partition Plan for Palestine

US Office of the Historian·29 November 1947

On 29 November 1947 the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, the Partition Resolution, which proposed dividing the former British mandate of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. Jerusalem and its surrounding holy sites were to be a corpus separatum under international control administered by the UN. From the start, the international community claimed a role in dividing the land and governing Jerusalem, a theme Joel links to the nations who parted the land.
