Somalia plans unified digital government platform anchored on national ID

Biometric Update·19 October 2026

Somalia's Unified Public Service Delivery Center, Halmeel, plans to launch a single digital platform by March 2027 linking about 70 government services, from passports to business registration and payments. The national ID, which about 2 million people hold, is already the only identification accepted at Halmeel's service centres, so citizens without one must obtain it first. The project shows identity credentials becoming the gateway to state services, a pattern in which access depends on a single registered identity, though the stated aims are efficiency and revenue and data-protection safeguards are reportedly being developed.
