António Guterres told the UN General Assembly’s budget committee on 13 October 2026 that “the need for the United Nations has never been greater”. He proposed a $3.3 billion programme budget for 2027, $40.8 million below the approved 2026 level, and called for reliable payment of member-state dues. Further reforms and staff changes were planned. Short of money, the UN is openly arguing for its own future.
