Germany's Bundestag approves digital ID law for EU wallet

Biometric Update·16 October 2026

Germany's Bundestag has approved the Digital Identities Act, creating a legal basis for the national "d-you" digital identity wallet, due to launch on 2 January 2027 as part of the EU's common wallet system. Lawmakers made inclusion of a facial photo optional, but critics noted the lack of pseudonymous use, unresolved security design and a highly centralised approach. The law shows national identity systems being aligned with a shared European framework, and one opposition party warned the wallet may become practically unavoidable for daily services.
