A new consortium, mDL4EU, begins on 31 October 2026 with 24 EU member states, nearly 60 partners and a budget of about 10 million euros. It will test mobile driving licences that work across borders within the European Digital Identity Wallet system planned for 2028. The driving licence is one of the first credentials millions of Europeans will carry in a shared wallet, which makes it a concrete step toward a single, interoperable identity system across the continent.
