EU Digital Identity Wallets Expand Into Banking, Age Checks, Alcohol Sales

Biometric Update·19 September 2026

Germany launched its national EUDI Wallet "d-you" ahead of a January 2027 deadline, while Cyprus, Poland and Moldova race to integrate their own systems, and the EU Commission's proposed KIDS Act would require age verification via digital wallets or facial estimation for social media access. In the US and UK, new partnerships extend digital ID into benefits verification, alcohol sales and supermarket age checks, showing credentials moving from optional to routine infrastructure. This convergence of government identity, banking access and mandatory age verification points toward digital credentials becoming a precondition for ordinary commerce.
