Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in Washington on 26 March 1979, ending the state of war between them once ratifications were exchanged. Israel agreed to withdraw its armed forces and civilians from Sinai and restore Egyptian sovereignty there, with US President Jimmy Carter as witness. It was Israel's first peace treaty with an Arab state, and it traded land for peace under American guarantee, a model later deals have followed.
