Egypt and Israel signed a general armistice at Rhodes on 24 February 1949, ending fighting between their land, sea and air forces after Israel's war of independence. The agreement stated that its demarcation line was not a political or territorial boundary, and similar armistices with other neighbours followed. Israel's first agreements with its neighbours ended fighting without making peace, setting a pattern of ceasefires that has recurred ever since.
