US Customs and Border Protection is preparing to compete an application development contract worth up to $50 million that could build biometric capabilities, AI, data analytics and Internet of Things links into new and existing systems across the agency. The forecast does not say which applications would be affected, though CBP already uses facial biometrics at all international arrival airports and at border crossings, having processed over one billion travellers. The procurement shows identity verification and automated identification being embedded more deeply into routine border infrastructure, making oversight of how those systems are scoped and connected more important.
