Canadians Warm to EU 'Associate Membership' Proposal

Al Jazeera·19 September 2026

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has floated a new "associate member" status for Canada, a category not currently defined under EU treaties, covering defence, critical minerals, AI, energy and digital trade cooperation, following the breakdown of Canada-US trade talks and new tariffs. Canadian PM Mark Carney welcomed the proposal in Strasbourg, and polling shows 81 percent of Canadians support closer EU integration while remaining outside the bloc. The move illustrates Europe extending its political and economic reach beyond its own continent, drawing an external power into cooperative defence and technology structures as it consolidates a broader sphere of influence.
