Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin met US President Jimmy Carter at Camp David from 5 to 17 September 1978 and agreed a framework for peace in the Middle East. It set out negotiations on the West Bank and Gaza and a separate framework for an Egypt-Israel peace treaty, with Carter signing as witness. It was the first time a US president personally brokered terms between Israel and an Arab state, making Washington the guarantor of Israel's peace.
