Apple has introduced selfie-based facial age estimation in iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, which asks users in supported jurisdictions to prove they are adults before changing certain settings or downloading 18-plus apps. Apple says the analysis runs on the device and in its Private Cloud Compute, selfies are deleted afterwards, and users can fall back on a credit card or government ID. Selfie checks are documented for Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the UK. The change shows age-assurance laws pushing biometric checks into the operating system of everyday devices, normalising identity verification as a condition of access.
